Now I want a dog tattoo – Issue 3
Best of FDL 10/5-10/11: tattoos, podcasts, carpet names, occupations
It was an artistic week on FDL! Posts with beautiful portraits, photoshoots, tattoos, festive dyed tails, and even a Halloween-themed dog yard with dancing skeletons on the fence.
Congrats to Ashley H. for winning first place in the drawing category at the Rockwall Art League show for this amazing portrait of her dog! Gorgeous!

Dog tattoos
In separate posts, Natalee Y. asked: “My partner and I are looking to get some dog tattoos and we don't know where to start.… Can anyone recommend an artist or how to start the process?” and Terry R. asked: “I would love to see tattoos of your dogs or dog-related tats. Thinking about one…with dog’s paw in partner’s hand and maybe another one as a head portrait. What if the likeness is not good? My fear.”
(Terry - this is also my fear!)

Amy S. posted an example of an amazing line art tattoo from artist Mr. K at Bang Bang NYC and I had to see more. Here are a few great ones from his Instagram feed:
I read that getting an appointment with Mr. K could take 5-6 months, cost thousands, and he’s 1,813 miles from my house, but it still doesn’t seem unreasonable…
FLDers posted some great examples of their tattoos and helpful advice:
Definitely spend plenty of time looking at artist portfolios to make sure you like their style and, especially for watercolor, that they have experience doing it and doing it well. Find examples of designs/styles that you like to show your tattoo artist. Most artists will be happy to work with you to come up with a design from scratch, or you could find an independent graphic designer to make something for you that you can then bring to the tattoo artist. Etsy has plenty of artists that will make a line art/watercolor/whatever design from one of your photos (I'm sure there are other places to find them too, Etsy is just what I'm familiar with).
Talk to your artist ahead of time and ask to see portfolio photos that are similar in style to what you want. Look at small details, line clarity, shading, and that sort of thing. If you can see any healed photos, even better.
Just remember, “Cheap tattoos aren’t good and good tattoos aren’t cheap!” I couldn’t resist.
Haha! This last one 👆
Look at this stunning tattoo of Meagan S.’s heart dog (the glitter!! how did the artist – Kelly McGrath near Raleigh, NC – even do that??):

Dog podcasts
Jessica R. asked the group: “What are your podcasts? Bonus points if it's dog sport/training related. Sitting at home for a few weeks with a litter of puppies so I need something new to listen to. 🎧🎧🎧”
Top suggestions:
I got a real kick out of the fact that most of the non-dog-related podcast suggestions had something to do with true crime and murder. 🤔
STAINMASTER’s getting hip
Does somebody from FDL work in STAINMASTER’s branding department?
Katy W. was hanging out at Lowe’s, checking out the stain-resistant carpet section (of course – where else would any of us look?), and was amazed to see these dog-related carpet names: Futurity, Winner, Companion, Groom, Premium, Fly Ball (ahem…FLYBALL), Training, Prestigious, Canine, Behavior, Obedience, Class, Agility, Master, and Hybrid (to see all the colors and names, check out the Stainmaster PetProtect web page).

Click treat, STAINMASTER!
Favorite training clubs
Jessica I. asked the group: “Hey FDLivers...what does your favorite training place or club include to make it “your favorite”?”
I was seriously expecting people to focus on amenities – turf, matting, equipment, air conditioning and heating, a pool, crating area, easy parking, stuff like that. And people did mention those things. But here’s what they REALLY cared about:
People who don’t drive me nuts. Seriously. A club is made by the members 😂 A place can have the fanciest most perfect equipment, but if the other people there are unbearable...who cares.
Everything has been the people for me and understanding trainers. As long as it’s clean and such I’ve never had an issue with most places except when it’s the people.
Being nearby 😂
It’s local and has the trainers and members I like 🤷♀️ 😂
Less than 30 minutes away. Great people and a pool for dock lessons
Nearby, turf or non-slippery matting, available to rent and use equipment outside of class time, trainers
I like nice training conditions i.e. grass in good condition, misters, plenty of kenneling space in shade but ultimately it comes down to the instructor.
Sheep 🐑😁
Top post
The top post on FDL this week is from Marie G., who has a knack for asking engaging questions:

I often trip out when I find out what my dog friends do – I just see them running around on a disc dog field throwing frisbees for their dogs and then it turns out they’re a doctor or a police officer or a software engineer or a teacher or a musician “in real life” (although we could argue that “real life” is when we’re playing with our dogs 🙃).
The comments on Marie’s post are gold – you may find that another FDLer does the thing you want to do or exactly the thing you need help with (did you know we have an actual Epidemiologist in FDL???? The whole world needs her help!): https://www.facebook.com/groups/finedogliving/permalink/3434201743335985/
FDL is…
Thanks, Trish B., for making us all feel sane with your groceries safely stashed in your dog crate!
